     【2】Companionship of Books
A man may usually be known by the books he reads as well as by the company he keeps; for there is a companionship of books as well as of men; and one should always live in the best company, whether it be of books or of men.
A good book may be among the best of friends. It is the same today that it always was, and it will never chance. It is the most patient and cheerful of companions. It does not turn its back upon us in times of adversity or distress. It always receives us with the same kindness, amusing and instructing us in youth, and comforting and consoling us in age.
Men often discover their affinity to each other by the mutual love they have for a book just as two persons sometimes discover a friend by the admiration which both entertain for a third. There is an old proverb, "Love me, love my dog." But there is more wisdom in this: "Love me, love my book." The book is a truer and higher bond of union. Men can think, feel, and sympathize with each other through their favorite author. They live in him together, and he in them.
"Books," said Hazlitt, "wind into the heart; the poet's verse slides in the current of our blood. We read them when young, we remember them when old. We feel that it has happened to ourselves. They are to be very cheap and good. We breathe but the air of books."
A good book is often the best urn of a life enshrining the best that life could think out; for the world of a man's life is, for the most part, but the world of his thoughts. Thus the best books are treasuries of good words, the golden thoughts, which, remembered and cherished, become our constant companions and comforters. "They are never alone," said Sir Philip Sidney, "that are accompanied by noble thoughts." The good and true thought may in times of temptation be as an angel of mercy purifying and guarding the soul. It also enshrines the germs of action, for good words almost always inspire to good works.
Books possess an essence of immortality. They are by far the most lasting products of human effort. Temples and statues decay, but books survive. Time is of no account with great thoughts, which are as fresh today as when they first passed through their author's minds, ages ago. What was then said and thought still speaks to us as vividly as ever from the printed page. The only effect of time has been to sift out the bad products; for nothing in literature can long survive but what is really good.
Books introduce us into the best society; they bring us into the presence of the greatest minds that have ever lived. We hear what they said and did; we see them as if they were really alive; we sympathize with them, enjoy with them, grieve with them; their experience becomes ours, and we feel as if we were in a measure actors with them in the scenes which they describe.
The great and good do not die, even in this world. Embalmed in books, their spirits walk abroad. The book is a living voice. It is an intellect to which one still listens. Hence we ever remain under the influence of the great men of old. The imperial intellects of the world are as much alive now as they were ages ago.
    1.此处的“as well as”相当于连词"and"、连接两个介词短语。
此从句可以变为“be it of books or of men”.
    3."the same as"和"the same that"都指“和… 此处指的是好书本身,故而用的是"the same that".
省略"that”的定语从句从句"they have for a book”用于修饰“love"。 关系代词“which”引导的定语从句“which both entertain for a third”用于修饰“admiration"。
    5."Love me, love my dog.”常被译为“爱屋及乌”英语中有关“dog”的谚语很多,比如:a lucky dog(幸运儿);Every dog has his day.(人人皆有得意日。);It rains cats and dogs.(下倾盆大雨。);a cat-and-dog life(争争吵吵的日子)等等。

Someone on the boat asked him:
"Why don't you jump into the water at once to fish for your sword? What's the use of making his mark on the side of the boat?"
He pointed to the mark on the side of the boat, saying unhurriedly:
"There is no need to worry. My sword fell into the river at this marked place. As soon as the boat reaches the dock and pulls in to shore, I will jump down from here to retrieve my sword."
4.Startling the World with a Single Cry
It had been three years since King Zhuang of Chu ascended the throne, but he had neither issued a law nor dealt with any state affairs. Furthermore, there were no deeds worth mentioning. All the civiland military officials of the court couldn't understand what was the matter.
One day, a military official quietly asked King of Chu in the carriage:
"Your Majesty, I heard that in the south, there was a big bird dwelling in the hills.Three years passed, it neither flew nor cried. Could Your Majesty tell me the reason?"
King Zhuang of Chu smiled and answered:
"It didn't spread its wings to fly for three years in order to grow full-fledged. It didn't cry for three years in order to carefully observe the conditions of the people in the world. This bird, once it flies, will soar high into the sky; once it cries, it will startle the world with a single cry."

        Antoine de Saint-Exupéry

         2、Flipped
        Wendelin Van Draanen
         3、Murder on the Orient Express
        Agatha Christie
         4、The House on Mango Street
        Sandra Cisneros
5、The Old Man and the Sea
        Ernest Hemingway
         6、Life of Pi
        Yann Martel
         7、Pride and Prejudice
        Jane Austen

《阅读的力量》 提出了“引人入胜(不仅是有趣)输入假说”【 the compelling (not just interesting) input hypothesis】。

 Magic Tree House《

       这套书首先是一套儿童文学作品,其不长的篇幅(每本约5000字左右),语言简单,情节设计吸引人,黑白插图。非常适合低龄孩子进行起步的阅读训练,它被广泛的用作课外阅读和教学读物,著名的 北京Lily英语机构 就用这套书在感高6册里第1课讲这套书的第一本。

      这套书同时也是知识读物。故事里有意识地穿插各种各样的知识。虽然这些涉及各个领域的知识在每本故事里都不多,而且都是点到为止,但是因为知识与故事的有机结合,大大地启迪了孩子的求知欲。引起孩子主动进行相关知识的扩展和深度阅读,也是这套书产生的一个神奇效果。很多孩子从神奇树屋起,开始爱上了英文读书。

 1. 充满无限想象的冒险故事,带孩子在书中游遍世界;

 3. 文字不多,5000字左右,难度不大,帮孩子从绘本过渡到纯文字阅读;

 Dinosaurs Before Dark《神奇树屋1:恐龙谷历险记》《神奇树屋》中的第1本,一共10章,5000字;

Jack and Annie travel by opening a book, pointing at a picture of a place and then wishing that they could go there. The magic tree house then spins around and magically they arrive at the location
